Bon Sake Sushi: A Fusion of Flavor Excellence
Starting our day at the Global Wildlife Center in Folsom, Louisiana, my companion and I decided to seek out a meal at Bon Sake Sushi & Bar, stepping outside our usual New Orleans dining spots while still staying close to familiar surroundings. We wanted a change of pace—somewhere quieter, yet offering something new. Covington, with its charming small-town atmosphere and burgeoning culinary scene, felt like the perfect destination. Known for its blend of historic character and modern touches, Covington provided the ideal setting for an evening of good food and relaxation.
Covington is known for its old-world charm, quaint streets, and a downtown area filled with restored historic buildings, local boutiques, and eateries. The town’s layout still includes unique ox lots—public spaces once used for trade—now converted into convenient parking areas that add to the town’s charm. The preservation of these historic touches alongside modern growth makes Covington appealing to both residents and visitors alike.
A Perfect Evening in Covington at Bon Sake Sushi & Bar
Bon Sake Sushi & Bar is located on Columbia Street, right in the heart of downtown Covington. After spending the day at the wildlife center, my companion and I decided that Bon Sake, with its fusion menu and lively atmosphere, was exactly what we were looking for to round out our day. When we arrived, the restaurant was fairly busy, and we did not have reservations. Given the popularity of the spot, I would recommend making reservations to secure a table. While they didn’t have interior seating available, we were able to be seated outside, which turned out to be a pleasant experience.
I’ve tried other sushi restaurants in the area, including Rock-n-Saké on Fulton Street in New Orleans. While Rock-n-Saké has a vibrant and energetic atmosphere, with upbeat music and a bustling vibe, I find Bon Sake to be more appealing because of its location in a renovated house. Bon Sake offers a more intimate and relaxed setting, and its peaceful, rustic charm provides a stark contrast to the high-energy ambiance of Rock-n-Saké. Though Rock-n-Saké is fun for a lively night out, Bon Sake’s quieter and more laid-back environment is a better fit for an evening of unwinding and good food.

The exterior of the restaurant features a cozy, rustic charm, with outdoor seating that includes tables under bright blue umbrellas and a surrounding iron fence. The patio area is quite spacious, with heaters and plants that enhance the inviting atmosphere. Set within a renovated house, Bon Sake exudes a homey feel, further accentuated by a porch that extends along the front and side of the building. This shaded, covered space offers comfortable seating and modern lighting fixtures, creating a welcoming environment for diners. The greenery and trees surrounding the property give it a peaceful vibe, perfect for a relaxed dining experience. Nearby, a sidewalk runs along a residential street, providing easy access for patrons.
Inside, Bon Sake is equally impressive. The restaurant’s interior exudes modern elegance with wooden ceilings, contemporary lighting, and a well-stocked bar illuminated by soft blue lights. Whether seated inside at a cozy table or on the outdoor patio, the atmosphere offers the perfect mix of relaxation and sophistication.
Bon Sake’s Menu: An Impressive Fusion of Flavors
Bon Sake’s menu reflects the restaurant’s commitment to creativity and quality. From sushi to small plates and inventive cocktails, each dish is crafted with attention to detail and fresh ingredients. The menu offers a fusion of traditional Japanese flavors with Southern influences, resulting in a wide variety of offerings that cater to both purists and those seeking a more adventurous dining experience.
We began our meal with a round of drinks. I opted for the Smoked Japanese Old-Fashioned, which came with an impressive presentation. Toki Japanese whiskey, bitters, and house-made simple syrup were combined in a glass dome filled with smoke, enhancing the drink’s flavor and giving it a rich, aromatic finish. The experience was as much about the presentation as it was about the taste, making it a standout moment of the evening. My companion chose the Lemon Drop Martini, a classic cocktail made with vodka, though it can also be ordered with sake for a unique twist. Both drinks were delicious and set the tone for the meal.
Small Plates to Start
For appetizers, we decided to sample a few options from the small plates menu. One standout was the Gyoza—crispy pan-fried dumplings filled with a savory pork and vegetable mixture. These perfectly cooked dumplings were served with a tangy dipping sauce that complemented the rich flavors of the filling. The crisp exterior contrasted beautifully with the soft, flavorful interior, making them a delightful start to our meal.
Additionally, we ordered the crab cakes, a dish that wasn’t listed on the menu but seemed to be a seasonal or chef’s special. These crab cakes were beautifully presented, topped with fresh scallions, and served with a creamy sauce that complemented the crispy exterior. The inside was tender and packed with the sweet, rich flavor of crab. From the first bite, it was clear that Bon Sake prioritizes high-quality ingredients and expert preparation.
Another standout small plate was the Beef Maki. This dish featured teriyaki BBQ ribeye beef rolled with asparagus and white onion, served on a sizzling plate. The beef was tender and flavorful, paired perfectly with the fresh crunch of the asparagus. The combination of sweet and savory flavors made this dish a highlight of our meal, showcasing the fusion style that Bon Sake excels at.

A Standout Sashimi Dish
One of the most memorable dishes we enjoyed that evening was the Seared Salmon Sashimi. This beautifully presented dish featured perfectly seared slices of salmon served in a shallow pool of ponzu sauce, topped with lemon zest. The salmon was rich and buttery, with the searing adding a slight charred flavor that balanced the acidity of the ponzu. The lemon zest added a bright citrus note that elevated the overall flavor profile, making each bite refreshing and indulgent. This dish was a perfect representation of Bon Sake’s skill in taking traditional Japanese dishes and giving them a modern, creative twist.

The Sushi Rolls: An Exploration of Flavor
Bon Sake’s sushi rolls are where the restaurant’s creativity truly shines. The first roll we tried was the Bimini Bay Roll, one of the restaurant’s signature offerings. This roll was a decadent fusion of seared salmon, tempura shrimp, snow crab, avocado, and cream cheese, all topped with rendered foie gras fat and goat cheese. The roll’s indulgent flavors were balanced by the freshness of the seafood, making it a standout dish that exemplifies Bon Sake’s approach to sushi.
The second roll was a Chef’s Special, which wasn’t listed on the standard menu but seemed similar to the High Roller Roll. This roll featured lump blue crab, tuna, avocado, and truffle honey, creating a luxurious combination of flavors. Each bite was rich and satisfying, with the truffle honey adding a subtle sweetness that complemented the savory ingredients. It’s clear that Bon Sake’s chefs enjoy experimenting with flavors and textures, and this roll was a testament to their culinary creativity.
Dessert: A Lackluster Ending at Bon Sake
To finish off the meal, we decided to try the Banana Foster Bread Pudding. While I’m typically a fan of both bananas foster and bread pudding, this fusion dish didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The bread pudding was slightly dry, and the flavors didn’t meld as well as I had hoped. I don’t know if it was because I was already full and satisfied from how much food we had already eaten, but after taking a bite or two, I realized the dessert just wasn’t doing it for me. We ended up leaving the majority of it at the restaurant. Despite this, the dessert had potential, and I appreciated the restaurant’s effort to combine two classic desserts into one innovative dish.
Bon Sake Stands Out Among Other Dining Options
Bon Sake’s atmosphere is one of the reasons it stands out among other dining options in Covington. The restaurant’s relaxed yet refined vibe makes it an ideal spot for both casual dinners and special occasions. The outdoor seating area is particularly appealing, offering a charming space to enjoy a meal on a cool evening. Inside, the restaurant’s modern design and warm lighting create a welcoming environment that invites guests to linger over their food and drinks.
The service at Bon Sake was attentive and friendly. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and eager to offer recommendations, making sure that we had everything we needed throughout the meal. The combination of excellent service, delicious food, and a cozy atmosphere made for a memorable dining experience.
While enjoying my meal, I couldn’t help but think back to my experience at Savvy Sliders in Metairie, which left me disappointed. This time, however, the flavors were far more satisfying, similar to the delightful lunch I had at Junior’s on Harrison Ave, where their burger really hit the spot. It reminded me of the unique and bold tastes I encountered at El Chango Borracho, a game day feast that was truly unforgettable.
Exploring Covington: More than Just a Meal
One of the things that made our meal at Bon Sake even more enjoyable was the town of Covington itself. Known for its blend of historic charm and modern amenities, Covington is a popular destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of New Orleans without venturing too far away. The town’s historic district is filled with art galleries, boutiques, and local shops, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely day of shopping and dining.
