Broski’s Subs: A New Spot with Potential but Room for Improvement

Broski’s Subs officially opened its doors today in Downtown Gretna, taking over the corner location at Fourth Street and Huey P. Long Avenue, across from Common Grounds. This new sandwich shop occupies the space that was previously home to Roule Rolled Ice Cream and offers a menu selection of signature subs, sides, and desserts. Like any new Gretna restaurant, it experienced some growing pains on its first day.

Clean, Modern and Casual Atmosphere

The interior of Broski’s Sub Sandwiches is clean, modern, and casual, with bright red accent walls and black tables that provide a laid-back dining space. Sports memorabilia, such as framed jerseys, adds a local touch, and the presence of a TV airing live games makes it an ideal spot for sports fans. There’s also outdoor seating available, making it a convenient spot for a quick lunch or casual meal in Gretna.

This Gretna sandwich shop features a “build-your-own” sandwich option with a wide variety of meats, cheeses, toppings, and sauces. They offer signature subs like the Slow Cooked Certified Angus Beef Prime Rib and the Smoked BBQ Beef Brisket, both served on buttered brioche buns, along with sides like Cajun Waffle Fries and mac n cheese.

Plenty of Selection Beyond Sub Sandwiches

Beyond sandwiches, Broski’s offers a variety of snacks and beverages. The drinks are displayed in coolers and include a range of options like Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite, Barq’s Root Beer, and bottled water. There’s also a selection of chips, featuring brands such as Miss Vickie’s, Zapp’s, SunChips, Veggie Straws, and Metro Deli. For dessert, they offer Mini Melts ice cream, with flavors like Cookies & Cream, Cake Pop, and Rainbow Ice, making it a great option for families or casual diners in Downtown Gretna.

Experiencing Broski’s for the First Time

Being their first day, the staff at this Gretna sandwich shop seemed a bit disorganized and overwhelmed with handling orders. My coworker and I both ordered the same sandwich with slight variations—I requested Swiss cheese, while my coworker opted for provolone. Unfortunately, the ordering process went awry. After making my sandwich, the staff proceeded to prepare the order for the customer behind us before finally making my coworker’s sandwich. This led to confusion, and when we got back to the office, we realized that my coworker’s sandwich was missing the cheese he requested.

Another issue was the lack of communication regarding toppings. After my sandwich was made, I moved to the register to pay, but at no point did anyone ask if I wanted additional toppings. In the rush, I didn’t realize until later that my sandwich was missing the toppings I would typically order.

We also encountered a small hiccup with the au jus sauce. Both sandwiches came with a small container of the sauce, but by the time we reached the office, most of the sauce had spilled in the bag. Although I recognize I could have been more careful during transport, the restaurant might consider a more secure way to package the sauce for takeout orders.

Not Just a Sub Sandwich Shop

Despite the ordering mishaps, the quality of the food at Broski’s Sub Sandwiches was promising. The Slow Cooked Certified Angus Beef Prime Rib Sandwich was well-prepared, with a soft brioche bun and tender, flavorful meat. The sandwich, while lacking my usual toppings, was still enjoyable. The Loaded Cajun Waffle Fries, topped with cheddar cheese, roast beef and gravy, and chives, were delicious. They were served warm and crispy, with the toppings adding just the right amount of richness.

In comparison to other recent sub experiences, like at Jersey Mike’s, Broski’s Subs offers a more flavorful option. I found Jersey Mike’s subs to be a bit bland overall, while the sandwich I had at this Gretna restaurant—although technically not a sub due to its brioche bun and different type of meat—was much more flavorful. The prime rib was tender and well-seasoned, making for a more enjoyable and memorable meal.

My coworker had similar thoughts about his meal, despite the missing cheese. While Broski’s still has some fine-tuning to do when it comes to execution, the food quality indicates that this Gretna sandwich shop has great potential.

A More Flavorful Sandwich

While I wrote an article last week about Jersey Mike’s Subs and want to give them another shot, Broski’s Sub Sandwiches offers a distinct alternative. With a local vibe and better quality ingredients, I found Broski’s to be a better choice than places like Subway or Jimmy John’s, providing a more satisfying and flavorful meal. For those looking for a Gretna restaurant with a more personalized touch, this new spot has a lot to offer.

The Location Advantage and Gretna Fest

Located in Downtown Gretna, Broski’s Subs is ideally situated. Gretna is home to many restaurants, but most are closed on Mondays, giving Broski’s a slight advantage on a day when options are limited. Additionally, the restaurant is situated along the popular Huey P. Long Avenue corridor, where people often enjoy strolling on the weekends. This prime location could draw in visitors who are looking for a quick and tasty meal while out in Gretna enjoying the Farmer’s Market or the Art Walk.

With Gretna Fest approaching in just two weeks, Broski’s Sub Sandwiches is conveniently located within the festival grounds and will likely be a great option for attendees looking for a quick bite during the event. As Downtown Gretna fills with locals and visitors for the festivities, Broski’s could become a convenient and delicious stop for festival-goers.

Come try the Newest Gretna Restaurant

Broski’s Subs has the foundation to be a solid local spot, but they need to iron out the kinks in their ordering process and takeout packaging, especially given the competitive restaurant scene in Gretna. First-day hiccups are understandable, and with time and experience, I expect these issues will improve.

For those looking to try a new Gretna sandwich shop, Broski’s has a lot to offer, from their signature sandwiches to customizable options. If you do decide to stop by, don’t forget to check out their selection of drinks, chips, and Mini Melts ice cream. Just be sure to double-check your order before leaving. I look forward to revisiting in the coming weeks to see how they evolve.
