A Relaxed Waterfront Stop with Room for Improvement

Down the winding stretch of Marina Road in Port Sulphur (Myrtle Grove), you’ll find ByWater Dockside Bar & Grill, perched at the edge of Myrtle Grove Marina.

For boaters and locals alike, it’s a casual spot that offers easy access from the water and a laid-back atmosphere for grabbing a bite. Many anglers make their way here by boat from Lafitte, Louisiana — a popular launch point for those fishing the marshes and bays in this part of the state. The restaurant’s location makes it a convenient choice during a day on the water, with slips right below where you can tie up and head upstairs to the deck or dining room.

I stopped in for lunch with two others to see how this spot stacks up among the many casual marina restaurants along Louisiana’s coast.

Dining at Myrtle Grove Marina: First Impressions of ByWater Dockside

Arriving at Myrtle Grove Marina, the restaurant is easy to spot. The building is elevated above the slips, with stairs and a ramp leading up to a wide outdoor deck and a small indoor dining room.

The deck is one of the best features here — open, breezy, and offering a great view of the marina. It’s the kind of place where you could easily linger with a cold drink while watching boats come and go.

Inside, the dining room is small and was fairly crowded during our visit. Roughly 30 people were packed into the space, mostly at tables, with a few seated at the bar. The crowd leaned toward local workers on their lunch break, which is always a good sign that the place draws a steady clientele.

Decor is simple and casual — checkered tablecloths, fishing prints, and lighthearted coastal touches. The bar itself anchors one end of the room and adds to the relaxed vibe.

Inside the Restaurant and Atmosphere

While the outdoor deck is spacious, the interior seating is tight. If the weather is good, the deck is definitely the place to be. Indoors, conversation carries easily, and space between tables is limited.

Still, the room has a friendly energy, and service during our visit was fast and attentive. Our server kept drinks filled and orders moving despite the busy lunchtime crowd.

Lunch at ByWater Dockside: What We Ordered

We ordered three different items from the ByWater Dockside menu:

I chose the oyster po-boy, which turned out to be the highlight of the meal. The French bread was fresh, the oysters fried perfectly crisp, and the portion was generous. It’s exactly what you hope for in a marina po-boy.

One of my dining companions ordered the Phoenix Burger, which promised some heat with jalapeños and spicy sauce. While nicely presented, the burger itself was on the dry side and lacked the juiciness you expect at this price point.

The third dish was the Big John Burger, ordered plain. Unfortunately, it also suffered from dryness, with an overcooked patty that fell short.

All three meals came with a side of fries that reminded me of Rally’s — thin, seasoned, and crisp. If you like that style of fry, you’ll be happy with what’s served here.

Service and Experience at this Myrtle Grove Marina Restaurant

Service throughout the meal was solid. Our server was friendly, checked on us regularly, and kept the flow moving efficiently despite the crowd.

The atmosphere, while a little cramped indoors, felt welcoming and local. The bar looked like a good spot for those coming in for an afternoon drink, and again, the deck is where I’d recommend sitting if you have the choice.

For boaters, the convenience of being able to tie up and walk straight up to the restaurant is a real plus. The accessibility from Lafitte and other popular fishing areas makes this a handy stop for those spending the day on the water.

Value and Final Thoughts on ByWater Dockside Port Sulphur LA

Our bill for three came to just over $60 — fair for the portions and setting. The oyster po-boy easily justified its price. The burgers were disappointing for the cost and left room for improvement.

The menu leans toward marina comfort food: seafood platters, fried shrimp, burgers, po-boys, and pizzas. Execution matters, and during our visit, the seafood stood out while the burgers did not.

My advice is simple: stick with the seafood and po-boys here — they seem to be the kitchen’s strong suit.
